We learned to use the wizard writer today.
Here is a video Mrs Beal made with three of the senior citizens in it. I am also in this video so I am including it in my blog.
Our senior citizens, who did the senior citizens project with us last month, came and had tea with us today. They wanted to see what we have done in our blogs since they were last here. We baked some yummy goodies for them for tea. You can read about my senior citizen at the bottom of this page.

I interviewed Dorothy from NG Home for the elderly.
Dorothy as a small child
My name is Dorthy. I grew up with two children in my family. We lived in Durban. My mother and father worked in a delicatessen. People in those days had normal jobs. I remember before I went to school it was a hard time because of the depression. There were very few jobs available. When I was little I used to play as if I was a teacher.
Dorothy’s Primary School Days
In those days teachers were very strict. We did normal subjects, just like you, when I at school, but it was not the same system as today. We wrote on lines. We didn’t have computers. If you were naughty you would get caned with a wooden stick on the bottom. We didn’t get homework. I liked to play netball.
Dorothy as a teenager
When I was ten my dad lost his business due to the depression. When I was about 13 we had normal looking clothes similar to today’s ones. There were no cell phones back then but I have one here right now. Schools then only had inter-school activities so no there were no extramurals. Well there were lots of things to do but my favourite was horse riding, and playing bridge in the evenings. To get to my friends’ houses I had to walk. It was much safer then.
How has South Africa changed since Dorothy was a child?
Lots of things have changed like the politics and voting but most of all the amount of crime. There is so much more these days. I think it is because of all the poverty.
Does Dorothy have any interesting information about her own grandparents?
In those days we were healthy and my grandparents lived to 100. There was no pollution so you didn’t get very sick.
What advice can Dorothy give to help us in our lives?
Live a clean and happy life and you will then die happy.
Any herbs and remedies that were popular when Dorothy was a child?
Hot lemon and ginger were used to clear sore thoughts and stomachs. There was also a root that made you burp. It was funny watching people eat it then burp. I can’t remember its name.
Any other interesting stories you could tell us?
I was married to a banker and we traveled all over South Africa.
We even toured a diamond mine and saw the people working in it under the ground.
